Smitha Karki
General Manager
Smitha Karki is an accomplished IT professional and community leader who has called Sydney home since 1996. Originally from India, she moved to Australia shortly after marrying Ishwar Hegde on 15th December 1995, facing the challenges of a new culture and limited support with resilience and determination. Driven by a desire to grow personally and professionally, she began her career in the IT service industry, accumulating seven years of experience before joining Woolworths Group. Over the past nineteen years at Woolworths, Smitha has progressed to the executive role of General Manager of Strategic Programs and Project Capabilities, leading critical transformations and overseeing a practice of 700 program and project professionals. Renowned for her ability to tackle complex problems, she has built a personal brand synonymous with unwavering focus, hard work, and dependable results.
Beyond her professional sphere, Smitha draws deep inspiration from the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, particularly the principles of performing one’s duty without attachment to outcomes and practicing integrity and consistency in leadership. She credits these philosophies for helping her maintain balance and resilience in the face of life’s challenges, ultimately shaping her as a leader who values substance over status. Equally passionate about community service, Smitha dedicates her time to advocating for women’s mental health and supporting new migrants in need. Her longstanding involvement in Sydney Kannada Sangha – where she has served as President and now Vice-President – highlights her commitment to preserving cultural values and fostering community connections. Smitha’s family remains the cornerstone of her life, and she strives to pass on the very values that have guided her journey, instilling in her children a sense of responsibility, compassion, and determination. Through her professional achievements and community endeavors, Smitha continues to exemplify a life enriched by purpose, resilience, and service to others.
