Babu Mahadevan

Marine Engineer/IT

Babu Mahadevan, affectionately known as Dev Babu, is an engineer by profession whose life is deeply rooted in spirituality and Vedantic traditions. Beginning his career as a Marine Engineer, he navigated the high seas from 1982 to 1995 before settling in Sydney, Australia. Transitioning into the IT industry, Babu has enjoyed a successful professional journey and currently serves as an Enterprise Architect with the NSW Police Force, a role he humbly attributes to the grace of Lord Sri Krishna.

Born into a family with generations devoted to the Sringeri Shankaracharyals, Babu’s spiritual education commenced early, shaped profoundly by his participation in Chinmaya Yuva Kendra in Chennai from 1978 to 1982. Under the guidance and blessings of his revered Guru, Sri Bharathi Theertha Mahaswamigal of Sringeri Sharada Peetam, he achieved the “KanTastha Pareeksha” certification in 2013, demonstrating mastery in reciting all 700 verses of the Bhagavad Gita.

Since June 2014, with the blessings of the Sringeri Shankaracharyals, Babu has been voluntarily conducting structured Bhagavad Gita classes in Pymble, Sydney, welcoming students of all ages and backgrounds. His classes emphasize chant recitation, meticulous verse-by-verse translation, and in-depth philosophical discussions based on the revered Shankara Bhashyam commentary. Committed to fostering an accessible and comfortable learning environment, he also provides basic Sanskrit instruction and traditional Indian-style written examinations, alongside light refreshments—all offered freely.

Beyond his regular classes, Babu actively engages in community outreach, including delivering presentations such as the “Synopsis of Srimad Bhagavad Gita” to Australian university students in 2018, hosted by the Hindu Council of Australia. He gratefully acknowledges the profound spiritual influence of his Gyaana Guru, Sri Omkarananda Mahaswamigal of Theni, India, and remains dedicated to nurturing spiritual understanding and personal growth within the community.

Babu Mahadevan resides in Sydney with his loving family – his wife, Nirmala Babu, and daughter, Sadhvee Babu. Individuals interested in exploring the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita are warmly invited to contact him at 0402 115 223 or via email at devbab@gmail.com
